Fueling Strategies for Training and Competition

Timing and types of nutrients vary for each athlete. Planning YOUR individual strategy will come down to 1) relying on evidenced-based information; 2) following proven formulas; and 3) trial and error. Testing out different workouts and fueling combinations, as well as comparing your favorite products to new ones on the market and measuring results will yield your winning combination.

The Three Pillars

We help you design your Brick and Race Plan goals by using our three pillar approach

Pacer

Pacer is the heart of RaceDay. Provide it with your Swim Start Time, target Pacing and  Transition times then Pacer computes each discipline’s elapsed time as well as your overall Projected Race Time.It also compares to the Cutoff Times if you’re in “just finish” mode. The timing information generated by Pacer will feed (pun intended) directly into your Nutrition Plan.

Nutrition

Nutrition planning is vital to your race or training plan but is often sadly neglected. In this section your race is displayed in 15-minute intervals to which you add your hydration and fuel components. Each  product’s nutritional data will load into your plan. When you’ve completed the Nutrition Plan, RaceDay will compare it to your Nutrition Goals and display significant variations i.e. too much salt, not enough liquids etc.

Advanced Weather prediction

Lack of weather planning can have a negative impact on your race performance and cannot be ignored in your Race Plan. By using the Predictive Weather feature from our partner Dark Sky we are able to display the venue’s anticipated weather months in advance allowing the athlete to train and plan for those conditions. This information meshes with your nutrition plan so you can also adjust nutritional needs to forecasted conditions.

The Race Plan

RaceDay summarizes your Pacing, Nutrition and Weather information into one concise, standardized PDF document that is also shareable with your Coach and fellow Triathletes.

OUR STORY

I wish I could tell you that RaceDay was born in a sleek, corporate jet heading for that big race in Kona. Winging through the skies with the titans of the triathlon industry slapping me on the back as we all gulped down an endless supply of organic smoothies.

Nope. RaceDay was conceived in a tired Augusta, Georgia hotel room, the night before my first half Ironman. Previously I had completed 25 Sprints and Olympics but mytraining suffered  significantly before this race. I was ill prepared physically and mentally, nervous  and terrified of the dreaded DNF!

To settle my nerves, I opened my laptop where I had a spreadsheet to strategize my pacing. But it was elementary and there was nothing to help me map out my nutrition. So, I tried in vain. The more I struggled to plan the worse my “Plan” became. My big race was spiraling out of control before it even started.

Three hours later I closed the laptop and wondered the whole night:

How fast should I ride?

Did  I have all my gear? My nutrition?

How many calories do I need and  when?

Which bike aid station(s) should I refuel at?

Is downtown Augusta as hot as they say? Salt? Ice?

The next morning, I was greeted by the phrase“not wetsuit legal” and my race went downhill from there. I was really cold leaving the water which turned into freezing on the bike. And then the run was way hotter than Miami, my hometown. The afternoon was hot, humid and no Gulfstream breeze.  It was literally hell on earth. By the end I was cramping badly and deep into the “just finish”zone.  I eventually completed my dream race with eight minutes to spare.

Sitting on a bucket, just inside the finish line, I vowed never again. How could I blow my pacing, my nutrition and even the weather by so much? There has to be a better way.

And RaceDay was born!

Created out of necessity but developed with my love of the sport and a sincere desire to help my fellow triathletes. RaceDay was forged by a fantastic team of amateur and pro athletes, nutritionists, meteorologists, coders, designers, graphic artists and a lab who frankly slept a lot.

Welcome to the world of RaceDay.

It’s about…..time!
